Travellers visiting South Africa in May should know that the country's local government elections are taking place on Wednesday, 18 May 2011 for all districts and local municipalities in all 9 existing provinces.
The 2011 local government elections will elect the members of the district, metropolitan and local municipal councils, who, in turn, will elect the mayors of the municipalities to office. Municipal elections in South Africa are held every five years.
It is expected that the midweek election day will be, like in 1999 and 2004, declared a public holiday. We'll keep you posted.
